i have some calla lilies that a friend gave me and i was wondering how hardy they are. It is a color mix, and i have heard that only the whites will survive the winter and do well here? i believe they are Zantedeschia Hybrids. are they better in containers then in the ground?

Hi Sparklemama. Yes, the white variety and possible Green Goddess, white and green version are very hardy here but the smaller, colorful callas (hybrids) are not as hardy. Put them in containers so you can bring them in if you have too.

Thanks Jeanne..i have never growen them before but remeber others having said that the colored ones weren't frost hardy. Thought i would double check before i planted them. Green Goddess sounds very pretty, i would sure like to find one of those.
I'll be sure to look for that post lisa.

I've heard that green goddess is pretty hardy. Some people have overwintered the pink ones, they probably planted them deep. The yellow ones seem to be the least hardy. The old fashioned white is very hardy.

that means I now have another big pot to fill with a new plant-- yahoooo! each failure is just another opportunity to try someing new.

Fern, I can confirm that Z. 'Green Goddess' is very hardy. I lost some from not watering it enough during our drought, not from winter temps.

I've been growing calla lilies for 5 years in the Seattle area. They do really well. I couldn't figure out why. Then I realized they were growing right near where the clothes dryer belches out hot air. I think they like that. Try it.
