Windy Hill Farm Nursery is a small specialty nursery and demonstration garden located at 13735 NW Westside Road between the towns of Yamhill and Carlton in rural Yamhill County, Oregon. Each year they propagate a select group of the hundreds of varieties of plants they have in the garden: perennials, shrubs, trees, vines, grasses and groundcovers. Most of their plants are unusual or uncommonly found - a few are downright rare - some are garden stalwarts.

They are on an exposed site with high winds and greater temperature variation than the surrounding locale, making them a great test site for plant hardiness and viability. The bulk of their plants are hardy through USDA Zone 7 and many are much hardier. A few may perform best in Zone 8. They have Open Gardens periodically throughout the season, so that you can see these unusual plants in all stages of their development.

The nursery, begun in 1998, has a few special interest categories resulting from the owners' passions, such as an extensive collection of bamboo, over sixty cultivars of daylilies, and twenty-seven varieties of boxwood. Plus, every spring about two hundred perennials, selected from the best hybrids available, are offered. Research includes everything from trips to the Chelsea Flower Show in London, to scouring the Encyclopedia Botanica and talking to local growers. This selection is what makes Boxhill quirky and fun--visitors should see things they never do, growing in large plantings, in different seasons, and have confidence that a supporting cast of plants can be found here as well.

My favorite part: ". . .working towards using the farm as a large, shared habitat for wildlife, plants, the nursery, and us."

Although hybrids offer fascinating and beautiful plants, the rhododendron species are Bob's primary interest. Some 300 species populate the collection in his garden, providing a reliable source of seed and cuttings. He has paid particular attention to collecting plants true to the species description.

Kelly formerly had Reflective Gardens in Poulsbo, Washington, which offered an eclectic array of plants.

We just got an email from a customer who said we have "heart-palpitations caliber plants and not tiny seedlings like at 'xxxxxxxxx'. Phooey!" Our philosophy is to grow them long enough so they will grow for you. If they are really difficult and rare, chances are we are none to anxious to part with them so they will be pretty good sized.
