Japanese Garden to Feature
    Calligraphy Demonstration

The Japanese Garden presents a calligraphy demonstration with Shodo Harada Roshi from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at the Washington Park Arboretum Graham Visitors Center, 2300 Arboretum Dr. E.

Harada Roshi, an esteemed Zen Master in the Rinsai tradition, has trained with Zen Master and Calligrapher Yamada Mumon Roshi, and for the last 24 years he has served as the Abbot of Sogenji, a Rinsai Zen monastery in Okayama, Japan.

Calligraphy has a long and rich history in Japan both as an art form and as a teaching device well suited to Zen, with its emphasis on immediate and spontaneous expression.

During the demonstration, Harada Roshi will paint a number of scrolls, talk about their content, and take questions from the audience. The scrolls will be available for sale.

The demonstration, which is free and open to the public, is presented by a partnership of Seattle Parks and Recreation, the University of Washington Botanical Gardens, and the Japanese Garden Advisory Council.
