As pretty as the flowers on the side are, it really squishes the readable area on my screen. Please go back to the way it was!

Hmm,Chris, I hadn't noticed any squishing of the readable area on my screen. Deb, I think the pics should go the length of the page. I find the half pieces distracting in my periferial vision. If the pics bracketed the page from top to bottom, I think it would look better. I don't know if this would squish the readable area too or not.
LOL. You may not have asked for our opinions but you sure got 'em. BTW, I also think the pics are exquisite. |

I agree the photos are lovely, but...
I haven't noticed that the readable screen is squished (but I have a wide screen monitor, that might help) but I do find them distracting. They keep pulling my attention away to the periphery, not where I want my focus to be. Especially the white flowers - white is an attention getter. I like pretty pictures but I'm a fan of easily-read, uncluttered pages first. |

The flowers wouldn't be squish anything as the table stays the same size. The flowers are part of the background so they won't change anything. It may appear that way though. Can everyone please try it for awhile and tell me if it's still distracting in a few weeks?

I have a favorites list on the side so I only see a sliver of the flowers unless I get rid of the favorites. I'll try it for a while.

I agree with Jeanne, they should go the length of the screen. The size now is a bit distracting. But they do add quite an ornamental note. I think the fact I have a large moniter helps.

Noticed you flowers yesterday.
Was hoping yould try a background image. Noticed another version today. When I saw the two yesterday on right and left, I thought it would look cool to stack them one above the other in a compound image on the left side, repeating down the left side, purple over white, and again purple over white. Today, I've got purples stacked down the left, and on the right, a stack of whites 2/3s concealed under the forum with another stack of purple to it's right. So that is 3 columns. I'm guessing you made an image with the lupine on the left, ane white flower on right, and I'm just catching the repeat on my wide screens. I do appreciate all the feedback, although I won't be able to experiment further for the next few days as I will be out of town. Thanks everyone!

Wow. Sorry! My eyes must be playing tricks on me, then. I'd swear that even the fonts are smaller!
I just have a regular monitor, so maybe the pictures are more within my line of view? I should try it out on my husband's mega-monitor and see what happens. |

Okay, this is weird. I've played with the width of the page and I get a different look each time.
If I go full width by clicking the maximize button (or whatever it is called), I see only the purple flowers on the far left with a swath of background color between flower and center column, and nothing on the right, just a wide swath of background color. If I adjust the size manually (using the mouse to adjust the sides' widths), I see purple flowers on the left, double bands of purple and white flowers on the right. Right now I've shrunk its width so that all I see is the center - no flowers. And there's no side to side scroll bar below the page, which I normally see when I narrow a page. Maybe it's just me - old eyes or whatever - but I find that busier pages tire my eyes quickly and I don't linger or visit long. I'm glad I'm able to eliminate the flower bands if it continues to prove to be a distraction for me. Are you able to adjust the width to eliminate the flower bands, Chris? Does it help? Or does it just squish things even more on your regular monitor? |

Little more experimenting. The center widths for the main forum page and its sections needs one width setting to eliminate the side flower bands; a sub-section within each section and a thread needs another width. It seems that the width of the center section isn't the same page to page.
Has anyone else noticed this? I don't think I did until I tried to eliminate the flower bands. Edited by Lisa A - Sep-21-2007 at 11:11am |

Each main forum category index has about 8 columns, including an icon, "topic starter" etc. - like "Rainy Side Cafe". Going to the next index level down the chain, there are only 5 columns. That's one reason for the width variation. If this posts, here's a version that came to mind...
