Rainy Side Notes

D. wallichiana's vase-like shape, makes it a perfect choice for smaller gardens that need height. I planted my fern under a Fatsia with our native Vancouveria at its feet. The contrast in foliage is a pleasing composition in my opinion. For a shady winter garden, this fern is a great addition. It dislikes hot summers and adapts easily to our mild maritime climate in the Pacific Northwest. I prefer seeing this fern grown as a single specimen, where it's vase shape form can be appreciated.

Dryopteris wallichiana is a 2005 Great Plant Pick.
