Cupressus and Bacopa Container

After planting

While at my favorite local nursery, I was admiring the golden-green foliage of Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest'. I picked up the pot and noticed the wonderful lemon scent the conifer had. Thinking it was not hardy enough for my garden, I purchased it for a container. I chose Bacopa 'Olympic Gold' to drape down the sides, and in a month the Bacopa would fill out the bottom of the container.

I chose this container for its earth tones, feeling it would not overpower the plants I chose for it. Once the bacopa grows, the pot will hide under the foliage. I appreciated the simple look of the two plants that complimented each other while dressing up the entry to the greenhouse. In winter, I moved it into the greenhouse, as neither plant is hardy in our Pacific Northwest climate.

One year later.

A year later, after wintering over in the greenhouse, I placed the pot on top of a whiskey barrel to give the bacopa room to trail. The conifer had some die back so I pruned it, while the bacopa went wild. This planting lasted three years and by the fall of 2002, I knew it was time to repot or toss.

I tossed.
