The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Trees

Book Description: This book has been more than 12 years in the making, beginning with two years of research and planning followed by 10 years of on-site, meticulous painting of individual living trees as well as their detailed parts by painter David More. More is a supremely gifted botanical artist who managed in 10 years of his life to paint each of the more than 2000 individual color illustrations beautifully presented in this handsome new book.

The main section is devoted to 377 double-page spreads, which describe and illustrate more than 1000 species and varieties of trees. The trees illustrated were selected because they are commonly cultivated in England and continental Europe; most are also to be found in American gardens, and some are indeed native to North America. A small percentage of the trees documented will not be hardy enough for the most severe climates; hardiness information is provided. Each deciduous tree is illustrated with both a summer painting in full leaf and a winter silhouette. Both deciduous and evergreen trees are illustrated as well with close-up artwork detailing leaves or needles, bark, blossoms, fruit, nuts, or cones.

This book is a must-have for any reader with an interest in trees, whether he or she wishes to grow them, identify them, or simply take pleasure in the minutely detailed and beautifully drawn artwork of David More.

An Illustrated Guide to Maples

Book Description: Maples are an asset to any garden for their year-round ornamental qualities. From fiery red and bronzy orange to golden yellow and brilliant purple, maple leaves are simply brilliant in spring and autumn. Others exhibit fascinating variations in texture and shape, such as the paperbark maple, and maples offer surprisingly attractive flowers and fruits (called samaras). Whatever the reason for growing maples, a gardener can be easily overwhelmed by the large assortment of plants from which to choose.

With an unprecedented depth of photographic detail, Antoine le Hard˙ de Beaulieu has compiled the definitive guide to the beauty of maples. Many of the 250 maples he illustrates are still found mainly in arboreta and public gardens and are neglected by designers and home gardeners. His hope is that this book will create a new demand for these exceptional plants.

Supplementing the concise and practical descriptions are 1200 gorgeous photos showing different aspects of each plant. Landscape architects, garden designers, plant enthusiasts, and home gardeners will find this photobook a delightful and invaluable tool for making informed decisions about choosing the right tree or shrub. Book Description Jennifer Bennett has lived "lilac country" for more than 20 years, and is well placed to appreciate the lilac, which not only flourishes in cultivated gardens but roams wild across the countryside. Tracing the journey of a plant that will "grow well everywhere, in every soil," from its origins in Asia through Europe and the United Kingdom to North America some 250 years ago, Bennett brings this most familiar and glorious of flowers to vibrant life.

The lilac's bloom is a sign of spring everywhere, but a lesser-known fact is that its emerging flowers are also used as indicators by farmers planning pest control and crop plantings and by scientists engaged in charting global warming. Filled with uncommon information about this common plant, Bennett's book features chapters on its history; planning, planting and pruning; the lilac's place in the landscape, whether alone, in groupings or with perennials; a species list of usual and unusual plants, with names that range from 'Charles Lindbergh' and 'Martha Stewart' to 'Charm' and 'Glory'; exotic lilacs for the adventurous connoisseur; and lilac aid, which addresses one of gardening's most vexing questions: "Why won't it bloom?"

Lilacs for the Garden is a compendium of essential information for all who cherish this most resonant of garden companions. Whether you seek detail on plant requirements, mulching, grafting, fertilizing, multiplication, bloom time, fragrance, abiotic and biotic stresses, renovating neglected lilacs or a list of recommended species and where to find them, Bennett's latest book is an essential resource.

Maples of the World

Book Description: Acer holds a proud place among the largest and most important woody genera. Its enormous significance in both ornamental and economic uses is matched by its taxonomic complexity. This book represents the fruit of almost two decades of work by its distinguished authors. In 1975, three years before Timber Press published his landmark Japanese Maples, the late J. D. Vertrees visited the authors — a nurseryman, a taxonomist/dendrologist, and an avid maple collector — in The Netherlands and suggested that they collaborate to produce a definitive work on the genus. The challenge was accepted, and the three, for a time calling themselves the Club of Acerologists, set to work. An early outline of the book optimistically called for completion and publication within five years! As the initial work began, it became clear that a massive research effort was required; this took far longer than the authors had anticipated.

A full nineteen years after its initial conception the much-anticipated book is appearing, the first truly comprehensive treatment of the genus. Among the topics discussed are the history of maple names, maple structure, native habitats and distribution, pests and diseases, propagation, paleobotany and evolution, and reproduction and taxonomy. The heart of the book is the proposed revision of the genus, which combines with the exhaustive descriptions of hybrids and cultivars to create the greatest single source of information on maples in any language. More than 200 color photographs of significant species and cultivars add greatly to the book's usefulness. Of tremendous importance to botanists because of its taxonomic and nomenclatural contributions, as well as for its exhaustive bibliography, Maples of the World is a significant book for horticulturists, landscape architects and designers, growers, and gardeners because of the key role maples play in ornamental plantings.

Tree Bark

Book Description: How often do we overlook bark, a frequently beautiful and always important part of the plant, focusing instead on leaves, flowers, and the shape of the trunk and branches? Hugues Vaucher, a Swiss watchmaker with a lifelong fondness for trees and an eye for detail, illustrates the rich variety of colors, patterns, and textures of bark with more than 550 photographs in Tree Bark: A Color Guide. For a number of the trees, he provides photographs of younger and older specimens, showing the distinctive changes that age makes in bark, which must develop and expand to accommodate the growth of the tree.

This unique book also covers the diversity of bark in chapters on the structure, anatomy, and physical properties of this "clothing" of trees. Though humans have tended to concentrate on the uses of wood, bark has nonetheless lent itself to a rich variety of applications, and a chapter documents the surprisingly varied ethnobotany of bark. The medicinal properties of several types of bark are carefully outlined, and the reader will never think of cork as just a bottle-stopper again.

Originally published in French and German in the early 1990s, this new Timber Press edition of Tree Bark has been improved and expanded to include more than 440 species and varieties of trees from around the world. For this new book, tropical and subtropical trees, and trees from the Southern Hemisphere, have been added to broaden the coverage.

The cornerstone of this book is a hand-picked plant directory featuring both established favourites and lesser-known collectables, all chosen for their winter-flowering performance. Here you will find daphnes, viburnums, witch hazels, and camellias to suit every taste and garden situation. After years of observing how plants react to different types of wintry conditions, Michael Buffin explains what happens physiologically to plants in winter, how they respond to different types of cold — low temperatures, bitter winds, saturated ground — and what gardeners can do to help their choice winter-flowering shrubs flourish. Tips on combining winter-flowering shrubs, using winter sunlight to backlight choice specimens, and getting the right balance of plants that offer different characteristics, complete this practical and inspiring guide.

Witch Hazels (Royal Horticultural Society Plant Collector Guide)

This book promises to change all that by turning the spotlight on these magical shrubs, highlighting their diversity and providing practical, comparative information that will thrill enthusiast and newcomer alike. The book starts with an introduction to the genus followed by detailed descriptions of the four species and their hybrids. These will be of immense value to gardeners as they consider distinguishing features and work out which will perform best for them. The book further aids identification by noting how local conditions can significantly affect plant characteristics including rate of growth, size of plant, leaf retention, and flower color. Cultural requirements and hardiness tolerance are clearly outlined, further ensuring success in the garden. This is the first attempt to authenticate and describe all known selections, varieties, and species in one text. It will be an invaluable resource for gardeners and collectors for years to come.
