Agapanthus: A Revision of the Genus

From Timber Press Known as "lilies of the Nile" (though they’re native to South Africa), the showy perennials in the genus Agapanthus have been avidly collected and grown since they were discovered by Dutch explorers in the 17th century. The few species in the genus have been hybridized intensively, yielding hundreds of interesting and dramatic cultivars. Despite their huge popularity among gardeners, however, there has never been a truly comprehensive book on the genus, an oversight that has finally been corrected by author Wim Snoeijer, working in concert with Holland’s Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society. With keys and more than 100 color photos as an aid to identification, this groundbreaking book is one no devotee of these plants can afford to be without. To be published June 2004.

An Encyclopedia of Shade Perennials

If you would like an encyclopedia that provides information on over 7000 species and cultivars in 184 genera suited to the shade garden, this book is for you.

Book Description This encyclopedia provides information on more than 7000 species and cultivars in 184 genera, from Acanthus to Woodwardia—some new to horticulture, others unjustly overlooked, but all beautifully suited to the shade garden.

Schmid has half a century of gardening experience behind him; readers are therefore treated to both practical growing tips and his personal associations with the plants. The text is rounded out with 500 color photographs, many taken by the author himself.

The Genus Arisaema

A Monograph for Botanists and Nature Lovers (2nd Edition)

Book Description Arisaema is a large genus within the Arum family, consisting of about 200 species, subspecies, and varieties distributed widely around the globe. They are remarkable for their exotic-looking inflorescences — which inspired the common name of cobra lily — and for the fact that they can change sex from year to year.

The Genus Arisaema (2002) was the first comprehensive study of the genus since 1920, and indeed the first ever in the English language. This second revised and updated edition includes more than 10 new species described since 2002, along with recent developments in taxonomy, geographical distribution of species, revised tables for keying species, and many new photographs.

Coverage for each species (arranged by section) includes detailed descriptions of the subterranean stem, shoot, leaf, inflorescence, and fruiting spike, with notes on the flowering period, distribution, and habitat. Fabulous color photographs, many of plants in their natural habitat, are supplemented by color illustrations that clearly identify species. There are chapters on arisaemas in the wild and in cultivation, and on propagation, and cultivation notes are provided for each section.

This new edition is the only comprehensive, up-to-date book on the genus Arisaema, and will be welcomed by botanists, plant collectors, arisaema aficionados, and gardeners.

The Big Book of Northwest Perennials :

Choosing, Growing, Tending

Book Description: Returning with showy brilliance year after year, perennials continue to be the center of gardening interest both nationally and regionally. Master gardener Marty Wingate and photographer Jacqueline Koch present a gorgeous and definitive guide to the best perennials for Northwestern climates, filled with specific advice on how to select the best type and quality, as well as recommendations on which perennials work best together (similar light and water needs). The book features descriptions of 1,260 different plants. Wingate's easy-to-follow instructions on caring for perennials are enhanced by Koch's lovely photos, which fill the book with vibrant color.

The Color Encyclopedia of Hostas

Book Description: Hostas have come a long way since Thomas Hogg Junior sent his first shipment from Japan to his family’s Manhattan nursery in 1862. They are now consistently voted the gardener’s favorite perennial and it takes merely a glance to understand why. Their clean lines, sumptuous leaves and elegant flowers offer great potential for striking specimen plantings and also make them the most accommodating of companion plants.

With the advent of tissue culture and the rise of specialist nurseries, the range of hostas available has increased rapidly, and now gardeners are faced with a bewildering choice of over 4000 species and cultivars. The core of this encyclopedia is a fully illustrated collection of the world’s finest hostas handpicked by leading specialist Diana Grenfell. This valuable resource provides a full description and color photograph for more than 750 plants, equipping hosta lovers to judge esthetic merit and to choose the right plant for a particular situation. Organized by color, the encyclopedia is tailor-made to satisfy quests for the perfect glaucous blue or a cheerful yellow to light up a dark corner. Mike Shadrack’s enticing photographs capture the qualities of each hosta that make it distinctive and uniquely desirable.

Since hostas vary greatly in their individual requirements, the fine-tuned advice in the cultivation chapter will enable growers to raise their plants to a very high standard. Readers will be fascinated as Grenfell vividly recounts expeditions by collectors, breeders and nursery owners to study hostas in the wild, and charts their introduction to the West. Informative sections on hosta classification and botany, gardening ideas, advice on pests and diseases and a quick-reference list of the best hostas for different purposes add depth to this comprehensive review of the present-day hosta. This book will delight all gardeners and find a treasured place on the bookshelves of hosta enthusiasts everywhere.

Ever the scholar among professional gardeners, he is formidably knowledgeable, iconoclastic, sometimes dyspeptic or even rude, and always entertaining. He makes us see and he makes us think. Book Description: Few perennials are as tough and versatile as daylilies (genus Hemerocallis), and even fewer offer daylilies' enormous range of color, shape, and growing characteristics. The ease of hybridizing daylilies is a major attraction for the enthusiast. Any backyard gardener can hybridize daylilies, but this blessing of easy breeding can also be something of a curse to the newcomer. Tens of thousands of new daylilies are bred each year. How to choose and grow daylilies amidst this profusion? John Peat and Ted Petit have come to the rescue in this authoritative overview of all aspects of daylily history, cultivation, and breeding. Inspired by R. W. Munson Jr.'s classic treatment, Hemerocallis, they fully describe the history of the modern daylily. In the heart of the book, they detail the various types of hybrids and provide indispensable advice for growing all of them well. More than 200 beautiful color photographs and illustrations round out the work.

The Gardener's Guide to Growing Hardy Geraniums

An excerpt from this book: Gradually, inevitably, geraniums have been emerging from the shadows into the spotlight in recent years. At one time they had a very low profile, and were considered only as fillers, or bread-and-butter plants. One of their qualities is being good-natured, and they seemed quite content with a supporting role, but then it became increasingly apparent that they were rising stars with great potential. New species were introduced, new hybrids created, and at last they began to get the media coverage which sets the fashion in plants, as in so many other things — although in this case it is a fashion which is far from fleeting .
